A nip of whiskey in your coffee is nothing new, but the Cold Brew Old Fashioned is anything but traditional. A new take on the classic Old Fashioned, the balanced rye spice of Sagamore Spirit Straight Rye is the perfect pair for Mr Black’s bittersweet Cold Brew Liquor.

We love this cocktail. It’s a little boozy, not too sweet, there’s plenty of coffee, but it doesn’t dominate, and did we mention it’s simple to make? The rye spice plays beautifully with the robust arabica coffee, and the orange ties them together beautifully.

For the love of all things bitter and sweet, the Negroni is absolutely our favorite, non coffee cocktail. But I bet you can guess what makes it taste even better in our opinion; that’s right, coffee.

Whiskey cocktails are usually thought of as strong, direct, and bold, but they don’t have to be, you can just as easily add citrus and sugar, shake it up to a nice frothy consistency, and have something refreshing and flavorful. Here’s our play on a classic whiskey cocktail featuring orgeat, an almond syrup whose sweet flavor blends together nicely with the nutty, rich arabica in Mr Black. These days, you can find orgeat pretty easily, try Small Hands Foods, or Liquid Alchemy’s offerings, both are perfect, and readily available for online purchase.
BLACK ORIOLE
.75 oz Sagamore Signature Rye
.75 oz Mr Black
.75 oz Campari
.75 oz Lemon Juice
1.5 oz Pineapple Juice
Add all ingredients into a cocktail shaker, add ice, shake and strain into a large, double old fashioned glass or a mai tai glass, garnish with an orange slice.
The Jungle Bird, traditionally made with rum, is one of the few cocktails to come out to the 1970’s and have staying power. This tropical cocktail is another that takes well to the addition of coffee, and with the spice from the Maryland style rye, is really quite special. Give it a go next time you need a liquid vacation.
